Course Description
The European and American modernist revolution that began in the late-19th century and continued into the 20th subverted traditional art and laid the groundwork for contemporary art. Through illustrated lectures and class discussions, you examine important artworks from the Romantic period through the pop-art era. You also explore the cultural conditions that produced these works—including the artists' lives—and investigate the critical and theoretical writings that shaped the aesthetic discourse and subsequent art history.
